This is one of the most important issues related to the beaches 🙂 Bandiera Blu means blue flag and it is a certification given to beaches that meet the cleanliness conditions for bathing areas.
Liguria has the highest number of beaches marked with Bandiera Blu in all of Italy (!) They’re 32, which is a record in the whole country! It also means that almost all the beaches in the region are safe and clean bathing areas.

Bandiera Verde
Exists also an additional certification called Bandiera Verde that means a green flag. It is given to beaches that are child-friendly. This certification is given by the association of paediatricians and currently, there are 144 beaches in Italy with such distinction.
4 beaches in Liguria have Bandiera Verde:
Finale Ligure
Noli
Lavagna
Lerici
{which, of course, doesn’t mean that other beaches are dangerous for children, it just means that these 4 have been chosen by the paediatricians association}
The criteria that are taken when choosing the Bandiera Verde certification:
- clearwater and clean beach
- shallow water
- presence of lifeguards on the beach
- umbrellas spaced far enough (but with the current anti-COVID standards, umbrellas are probably far apart on all beaches)
- places for feeding and changing
- the presence of playgrounds
