The Ligurian Sea is rich in various types of fish and seafood. When you are here on holiday you should absolutely try the local fish. Let me present you today one of them: Nasello (a hake). It is a typical, winter fish. It can be fished during the whole year, but the best moment to try it is a wintertime.

Italian name: Nasello

Latin name: Merluccius merluccius

Fishing area:

  • Mediterranean Sea
  • North Sea
  • The eastern Atlantic Ocean

Meat:

It is a mild fish that have more subtle flavour than cod. Nasello is considered one of the best fish in the whiting family. Its meat is a sweet and medium flake.

Price :

Its price depends on the season and on the size of a fish. However, it costs about 25€-30€/kg. 0,5 kg is enough for two persons.

Nutritional values:

It is an excellent source of Omega 3. It is high in protein content and contains very little calories from fat. In addition, it serves as an excellent source of vitamin B12.

Preparation:

It can be prepared in many different ways. Boiled, served with potatoes and mayonnaise, fried in oil and served with fresh vegetables or cooked with potatoes, garlic and olives. Prepared in all this ways the nasello is delicious, very dietetic (not if it’s fried 😉 ) and healthy.

Curiosity:

  • It can reach a length ground 140 cm and weight up to 15 kg!
  • The young feed on crustaceans. When they grow, they start to feed on small and medium-sized fish. The adults sometimes have even cannibalistic behaviour and eat the smaller members of their own species!!!

Even if it is a little bit cruel, nasello is very tasty anyway 😉 Definitely the fish to try!

Buon Appetito!

  1. Got it fresh in from the pescheria Pizzasegale in Via di Prè and cooked yesterday evening. With “pomodorini e prezzemolo”. Delicous!
