In the historical centre of Genoa, a street that brings this name exists. It is related to a legend and a very romantic story.
Name
There are many versions. The first comes from the surname of the Finomare family that owned this street. The second one, says that the name came from a statue of the Virgin Mary, which, although lost, stood in this street for years. However, the most fascinating and romantic version, even if devoid of historical proof, tells about a platonic love between the king of France, Louis XII and the Genoese noblewoman, Tommasina Spinola.
Legend
It was 1502. The king of France, Louis XII came to Genoa. His visit was connected to convincing the local nobility to help him with military aid in the war against Spain. During this visit, he met Tommasina Spinola, who is considered one of the most beautiful women in the Republic of Genoa. It was love at first sight for both of them. The king stayed in Genoa for a few days. After he left the city Tommasina fell into a deep depression and locked herself in her house. Soon after, untrue news reached Genoa about the king’s death during the battle of Cerignola. Tommasina plunged into total despair which led her to death. It was not until a year later that the king was informed about the death of his beloved. He returned to Genoa, drove to her house and when he was there he is supposed to have said this sentence: “This could have been a perfect love … “
